CALNE MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL : Safeguarding Policy
INTRODUCTION
The Calne Music and Arts Festival (CMAF) takes place annually over 10 days during the first half of October. The Festival programme typically includes concerts, recitals, an opera/operetta, talks, readings, drama, and a family day of art and craft activities.
An open art exhibitions runs alongside the Festival. The Trustees of CMAF organise and oversee the festival events. The committee of trustees includes the President, Chairperson, Treasurer and Safeguarding Lead.
Other volunteers support events and steward the art exhibition during the daytime.
Each year a number of young volunteers are recruited from local schools to help at events. Their time generally counts towards their the Duke of Edinburgh ‘Service’ Award.
In addition to ticket sales, CMAF receives financial sponsorship from several local businesses and Calne Town Council. Most events are ticketed though some, including the Family Day, are free. All events have volunteer members in attendance. Alcohol is available before and during the interval of the evening performances at Marden House. Sales are controlled in line with a Tens application from Wiltshire Council. Other beverages and food items are also available.
CMAF also has ‘Friends’ group, with over 200 members, who make an annual financial contribution towards the costs of the Festival.
Most of the CMAF events take place at the Marden House Centre, New Road, Calne. The venue has a performance space and the building can accommodate up to 120 people at any one time. The Marden House Centre also includes the ‘Mill Race’ - where adults with learning difficulties meet Mon-Fri, 10am-3.00 pm AND are taught and supervised by a team of staff from Family Action CMAF has no other affiliations.
CMAF is committed to the safety of all persons occupying our host premises and is aware of current legislative practice and procedures. It also takes account of current policies in place by our host premises.
POLICY STATEMENT
Those attending the festival events can purchase tickets online, via a box office managed by the local council, and can pay on the door. The audiences are drawn from a wide section of the local community.
CMAF is committed to all legislative and current practice in relation to young persons and vulnerable adults.
There are no circumstances where the CMAF partakes in the 6 areas of regulated behaviour covered in safeguarding legislation and practice.[see note 1] However there are circumstances where our activities touch on these.. We regularly supervise young person volunteers who are helping at festival events. Our Family Day attracts many families with mostly young children. Parents/guardians must stay with their children and are responsible for their supervision. Those running activities for children all have at least a Basic DBS check. The adults with learning difficulties with whom we share Marden House during the day Mon-Fri use a common entrance with both CMAF volunteers, visitors to the art exhibition and those attending daytime
events. Family Action staff are responsible for their supervision at all times and all are subject to Standard or Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service checks (DBS). We ask all our Trustees (CMAF committee members) to apply for a Basic DBS check. We also require them to disclose to the CMAF Chair and Safeguarding Officer , the result of this check. Basic DBS checks can only be applied for by the Volunteer. It is essential that all CMAF committee members are aware of our Safeguarding responsibilities, how to react to concerns and the need to be vigilant.
The CMAF will undertake to publish this Safeguarding Policy on our website and at premises that we occupy, our website and to signpost it in our festival brochure.
